Childhood Playlist
Songs have been a very inherent part of my childhood and growing up years. Music playing at home was as normal as waking up in the morning. The radio crooning in the background as we got on with our morning routine, my mum humming along to a tune whilst she prepared breakfast, watching a music show on television in the evening where the whole family enjoyed themselves. Songs evoke so many memories for me and I am keen that I note down a few that have been particularly significant in the first few years of R & Baby R’s childhood.
R loves songs, singing and music. As a baby he used to love clapping along to nursery rhymes. He would also giggle when I sang the rhyme in a different tone or made funny sounds when singing a verse or two.
Playing his favourite songs ensured a hassle free meal and singing to him during nap times became a stoic ritual. The latter continued until he turned 2.5yrs at which point we transitioned to bedtime stories. Around 2 yrs of age when his grasp over language and speech became stronger, he would correct my lyrics e.g. Cow says moo mummy, not maa! I remember singing to him when he was particularly distressed and it would help pacify him. Our first trip to India with him instantly comes to mind. He was brilliant during the long flight. However, as soon as we reached my in laws place, he cried uncontrollably. The sudden change in time, place, temperature all seemed to have hit him suddenly. That first night was a long one for him and me and the only song that helped soothe him was ‘Incy Wincy Spider’.
I would also sing to him during nursery runs and when he was able to sing he joined in too. These days at 3yrs of age, you can hear him humming to himself. We also play sing alongs with him where we each sing alternate lines of the rhyme. Also, I make up rhymes for him when I need him to help me with something e.g. Ronny Ronny, Yes Mummy? Will you eat an orange? Yes Mummy! Please bring your plate, Here it is!
It goes without saying that Alexa plays a huge part in helping him having easy access to music and songs. Truly grateful for this device!
Some of his favourite songs have been/are:
Incy Wincy Spider
Baby Shark
Horsey Horsey
Old mc Donald
Grand old duke of York
Wheels of the bus
If you’re happy and you know it
Finger family
Wind the bobbin up
Five little speckled frogs
Baby R too loves songs thanks to his Dada older brother constantly singing or asking Alexa to sing. Baby R’s current favourite is Baby Shark which helps calm him down when he’s distressed. He also really likes If you’re happy and you know it. In fact he started clapping at the right moments in this song which we found delightful considering he was only 8m at the time. Another set of songs he seems to enjoy are the Peppa Pig songs thanks again to his Dada. These are mandatory these days during meal times. Thank you to Peppa Pig for making the weaning process a little less chaotic!
It remains to be seen how baby R’s musical journey pans out. Also can’t wait for my boys to sing together. I can only imagine the cacophony and laughter that will fill our home. Looking forward to it 💛
